Cleveland's Classic Company at the Hanna Presents Stephen King's Unforgettable Thriller Misery

CLEVELAND, OH - Great Lakes Theater (GLT), Cleveland’s Classic Company, commences the second half its 2017-18 season with the Midwest stage premiere of Stephen King’s unforgettable thriller, Misery adapted for the stage by William Goldman. The production will be performed in the company’s intimate and audience-friendly home at the Hanna Theatre, Playhouse Square, February 16 – March 11, 2018. Great Lakes Theater’s own Producing Artistic Director, Charles Fee, directs the production. Misery is presented through special arrangement with DRAMATISTS PLAY SERVICE, INC.

Great Lakes Theater is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a generous public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Additionally, the Great Lakes Theater 2017-18 season is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC). The OAC is a state agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically. Media sponsors for GLT’s 56th season are FORM Group and ideastream (WCLV 104.9 FM, WCPN 90.3 FM & WVIZ)

Misery marks Andrew May's return to Great Lakes Theater in a leading role. In the production, he will portray the role of Paul Sheldon, the incapacitated author who is at the mercy of his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, played by Kathleen Pirkl Tague. Andrew last appeared on the GLT stage in 2009 as Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Since 2009, May starred in the international tour of War Horse, appeared in HBO's television series Big Love and assumed leading roles at Utah Shakespeare Festival and other regional theaters. Misery is Andrew’s 19th production as a GLT company member.

“We could not be more excited than to welcome Andrew May back to Great Lakes Theater in the central role of Paul Sheldon in our production of this Stephen King classic,” said Charles Fee, GLT’s Producing Artistic Director and the director of the Misery. “Andrew is simply one of the great repertory actors in the American theater…and his homecoming to Cleveland will be a wonderful celebration.”

Often hailed the number one mystery/thriller authors of our time, with over 50 worldwide bestsellers to his name, Stephen King’s intense thriller Misery will make its Midwest premiere on the Hanna Theatre stage. This has been a banner year for Stephen King who has over 25 projects at some stage of pre-production or production stemming from his chilling novels and short stories. Misery is most famous for the incredibly popular movie adaptation starring Kathy Bates and James Caan from the 90s.

Misery has thrilled audiences for decades. When successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon awakes in a secluded home, rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan” Annie Wilkes, fiction quickly becomes stark reality. While he semi-consciously convalesces under her “care,” Annie secretly reads the unpublished manuscript of his new novel Misery and becomes enraged upon discovering that he has killed off her favorite character. When Annie demands that he rewrite his novel, Paul quickly realizes that the only way to avoid his own personal unhappy ending is to outwit the sociopathic bibliophile that seems bound and determined to keep him permanently bedridden.
