Great Lakes Theater Presents Shakespeare's Classic Comedy Love's Labour's Lost at the Hanna Theatre

CLEVELAND, OH - Great Lakes Theater (GLT), Cleveland’s Classic Company, continues its 2016-17 season with William Shakespeare’s classic comedy, Love’s Labour’s Lost. The production will be performed in the company’s intimate and audience-friendly home at the Hanna Theatre, Playhouse Square, April 8 - 24, 2016.Tyne Rafaeli directs the production.

Generous production support for Love’s Labour’s Lost was provided by the Business Alliance of Great Lakes Theater. Great Lakes Theater is also supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Season support is provided by The Cleveland Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council. Media sponsors for GLT’s 54th season are The FORM Group, Ideastream (WCLV 104.9 FM, WCPN 90.3 FM and WVIZ) and WKSU 89.7 FM.

“I am pleased to welcome Tyne Rafaeli to the artistic family of Great Lakes this season,” said Fee of Love’s Labour’s Lost’s director who makes her GLT debut with the production. “Tyne comes to Great Lakes with a deep background in Shakespeare both as an actor and director. Her most recent work includes Shakespeare’s Othello for the Classic Stage Company in New York, as well as directing the first national tour of The Bridges of Madison County currently playing across the country. For the past two seasons, she has been Bartlett Sher’s assistant on Broadway and across the globe.”

“I am thrilled to be re-imagining this play for our own 21st century moment – a moment in which we are being forced to re-think our national value system and concepts of leadership, amidst a social landscape in which image, fame and persona are the highest currency,” said director Rafaeli of the production. She elaborated, “[Love’s Labour’s Lost] is a polyphonic explosion – a feast of style and language. Each character is a virtuoso player of their particular instrument. The world of the play is a kind of cloud-cuckoo-land, an ivory tower, a fortress of fantasy ripe for transformation. And as ever, beneath the ornament and artifice lies a deep well of emotion, offering an original spin on the timeless notion that only the heart gives access to true wisdom.”

William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost is an enchanting classic comedy. When a King decrees that his court be free of women so that he and his men may study without distraction, what could possibly go wrong? Nothing, until a beautiful princess and her delectable entourage pay a visit and put the men’s resolve to the ultimate test. Love letters gone awry set in motion a series of hysterical misadventures which turns the court topsy-turvy in a Shakespearean study of “Wooing 101.”

Great Lakes Theater’s acclaimed home at the Hanna Theatre features a visionary“Great Room” inspired design that integrates the artist and audience experience into a single unified environment. Hanna patrons select from a variety of seating opportunities including traditional theater seats, club chairs, lounge/bar seats, banquette couches and private box seating. Arranged in an intimate 550-seat thrust configuration where the audience surrounds the stage, no seat is further than 12 rows from the performance.

Great Lakes Theater offers patrons a robust series of Experience Enhancement Programming that is organized by day of week. The series highlights the Hanna’s unique amenities and affords access to artists.

The Hanna always opens its doors ninety minutes before each performance allowing patrons to observe the complete pre-show preparation process of GLT’s actors and technical staff. Elements traditionally hidden from audiences such as stage combat rehearsals, dance calls, prop/scenic pre-sets, technical cue rehearsals and actor warm-ups will be conducted in full view of patrons, offering GLT audiences an unprecedented glimpse into the theatrical process.
