Welcome - we're so glad you're here! This page is your go-to guide for everything you might want to know before attending a performance. From what to wear, to theater etiquette, to tips that will help you feel right at home, we want to ensure your experience is smooth, welcoming and unforgettable!

VENUE INFORMATION

The Hanna Theatre is Great Lakes Theater's primary home at Playhouse Square for all but one production each season. In 2008, we thoughtfully renovated the space to create an intimate, immersive and social environment that is ideally suited to showcase our extraordinary productions. We have created a unique and welcoming space, and we delight in crafting each production to make the most of this fantastic space.

Each winter, we return to our original Playhouse Square home in the Mimi Ohio Theatre for Northeast Ohio's favorite holiday tradition, A Christmas Carol. This beloved production was designed specifically for this theatre, and it's a joy to revisit the space that made us Playhouse Square's first resident company season after season.

First-Time Attendee FAQs

1. What should I wear?
Whatever makes you feel comfortable! There’s no official dress code at Great Lakes Theater. You’ll see everything from jeans and sneakers to cocktail dresses and suits. Whether you’re coming straight from work or making it a special night out, you’ll fit right in. Please keep in mind that you'll be seated for a couple of hours, so ensure you are comfortable. Additionally, our historic theaters do not have elevators, so please choose footwear accordingly.

2. Where can I park?
The Hanna Garage, located at East 17th and Prospect, is your most convenient option. It's directly attached to the Hanna Theatre, with an interior entrance. Prepaid parking is available only to our subscribers, but drive-up parking is typically available on the day of the event. Additional nearby options include the Playhouse Square Garage (located at East 15th & Chester) and several surface lots and garages in the district.

3. What time should I arrive?
We recommend arriving at least 45 minutes before curtain time. Arriving early also ensures time for parking, concessions, restrooms and finding your seat without rushing. Plus, the Hanna Theatre opens 60 minutes before the show, giving you a rare glimpse behind the scenes as the cast and crew prepare with onstage fight calls, set preparation and other pre-show moments unfolding right before your eyes.

Also, explore our Experience Enhancement programming that is free with your performance ticket! Enjoy pre-show discussions that offer behind-the-scenes insight, the chance to hear from members of the artistic team and a meaningful way to enrich your evening at the theater.

4. Are there concessions?
Yes! Our lobby concession stand offers a variety of treats, including candy, baked goods, soft pretzels, Coca-Cola products, bottled water, and coffee. Beer, wine and spirits are available at both this stand and the Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Bar inside the theater. Food and beverages are welcome at your seat. Please enjoy them quietly to avoid disrupting the performance.

5. What should I know about theater etiquette or rules specific to the Hanna Theatre and Playhouse Square?
To ensure a great experience for everyone:

  • Silence all devices before the show starts.

  • Avoid disruptive behavior, such as talking, loudly unwrapping snacks or rummaging through bags.

  • Photos and recordings are not allowed during the performance.

  • Plan restroom visits before the show or during intermission.

  • Be respectful of other guests, performers and theater staff.

  • Note: Playhouse Square is a firearms-free facility, and guests must pass through metal detectors before entering.

Live theater is a shared experience, and your courtesy makes it magical for everyone!

6. Is the theater accessible?
Yes. Please visit our Accessibility page for full details on access within the Hanna and Mimi Ohio Theatres, including special services and accommodations for guests with additional needs.

7. Are there restaurants nearby?
Absolutely! Check out the Playhouse Square Hotel & Dining Guide for the latest recommendations on nearby dining options, from quick bites to full meals before or after the show.
