The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare

Shakespeare’s First Folio is coming to Cleveland! Scholars believe that approximately 750 copies of the First Folio were printed. Only 233 survive today, and 82 are in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. the largest collection of First Folios in the world. The First Folio! fifty-state national tour is part of the Folger Shakespeare Library’s celebration of 400 years of Shakespeare. Great Lakes Theater has partnered with Cleveland Public Library (the site for the Ohio First Folio! tour stop from June 20 to July 30, 2016) and we are presenting a series of free special events as part of the collaboration. COSTUME COLLECTION DISPLAY: Opening June 24, a variety of beautiful costumes from Great Lakes Theater's Shakespearean productions will be on display in the newly renovated Brett Hall at Cleveland Public Library, Main Branch (325 Superior Ave. Cleveland, OH 44114). FREE PERFORMANCES: TWELFTH NIGHT (As Told By Malvolio) Adaptation by David Hansen / Based on the play by William Shakespeare “Like…totally,” this retro-re-imagining of Shakespeare’s gender-bending comedy is “some kind of wonderful!” A “brain,” a “jock,” a “princess” and a “criminal” retell the Bard’s classic tale as a 1980s teen romance in a FREE, forty-five minute Great Lakes Theater adaptation created especially for Cleveland Public Library.
