We share with you our developing plans for the re-opening of our theaters this fall at Playhouse Square to celebrate our 60th anniversary season.
Things are certainly looking a lot better than they did last year at this time. However, we still have some high hurdles to clear before we can come back together for live performances. We are working with our partners at Playhouse Square, as well as following guidance from the CDC and state and local health officials, to create a reopening plan that will ensure the health and safety of our audiences and our artists and production staff.
As of now, guidance includes wearing masks at performances and potential changes to some front-of-house protocols – including ticketing and food and beverage service. However, we know that, in the coming months, these guidelines will almost certainly change. We will keep you apprised as protocols evolve at Playhouse Square. With your help as our patrons and partners in safety, we are confident that live theater will return to our stages this fall.
Our biggest challenge right now is time. We simply don’t have enough of it. We know now that we will not be able to open our season as originally scheduled. Our revised plan is to open in mid-October at the Hanna Theatre with a single production of Shakespeare’s beautiful last play, The Tempest (Oct. 15-Nov. 7, 2021). Our season will continue at the Mimi Ohio Theatre with our annual holiday classic, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (Nov. 26-Dec 23, 2021). In the new year, we’ll return to the Hanna Theatre with familiar titles that include Ain’t Misbehavin’ (Feb. 11-Mar 6, 2022), Much Ado About Nothing (Mar. 25-Apr. 10, 2022), and The Marvelous Wonderettes (Apr. 29-May 22, 2022).
So, what are the next steps? For existing ticketholders: We have directly transferred your original subscription reservations into our reordered lineup – maintaining your performance dates and seating locations in nearly all cases. We will mail you a “Subscription Conversion Statement” that confirms your shows, dates, and times as well as any “Season Credit” amount that remains on your account for use in this season or next. We will also include information about how to submit additional ticket resolution requests conveniently online or via phone. If our adjusted season plans don’t match yours, please know that your purchases are 100% guaranteed – whether you choose to exchange, donate, or request a refund.
If you have a partial subscription that does not include our fall production, or if you have yet to subscribe and are interested in doing so, now is a fine time to do that as well. Our revised season is currently available for purchase.
As an epilogue to this message, we ask you to imagine this scene for a moment…
Time: Fall 2021
Place: Hanna Theatre, Playhouse Square
Enter: A young woman runs on stage and takes in the sight of a theater full of people. She speaks.
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world
That has such people in’t.”
The young woman is Miranda from The Tempest. Marooned on an uncharted island since the age of 3, she has been isolated from the world – except for her father, Prospero – until a group of strangers washes ashore following a shipwreck. For Miranda, her first sight of other people is truly a “wonder.”
We all feel like Miranda today.
Thank you for your patience, flexibility, understanding, and support. You have gotten us through this difficult time. We are truly grateful and look forward to welcoming you back to the theater this coming season for the “brave new world” of live performance.
