Seeing Red A FREE Outreach Touring Production

Written by: Daniel Hahn
Directed by: Andrew May

For over thirty years, the United States government called upon American citizens to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, where naming names of purported communists was as commonplace as it was ruinous. Seeing Red dramatizes the actual testimony of four key witnesses, concluding with Arthur Miller, whose momentous play The Crucible serves as an allegory for these congressional hearings. What happens when the government oversteps the bounds of its power and infringes upon the rights of citizens? How do individuals respond under persecution? What parallels exist in today’s political environment? Seeing Red is designed for audiences of all backgrounds. Recommended for ages junior high and up. This Surround event is free and open to the public at all non-school venues.

Student Designed Lobby Exhibit 'The Spirit of Dickens' November 28 – December 23, 2008
Ohio Theatre Lobby, Playhouse Square
In February 2008, Great Lakes Theater Festival provided a three-hour workshop for art students enrolled at the Firelands Association for the Visual Arts (FAVA) in Oberlin. This workshop provided an in-depth exploration of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, utilizing improvisation, theater exercises and readings from the novel. At the conclusion of the workshop, students were asked to begin composing original artwork inspired by A Christmas Carol, paying particular attention to Dickens’ descriptions of the supernatural, and to spend the coming months creating an original piece of artwork inspired by his writing. Nine months later, we proudly display the four winning pieces. Special thanks to Lorain County’s Gifted Program Coordinator Mary Ellen Carras for her coordination of and dedication to this project.
