On Tuesday, April 8 the works of six Lorain County Community College student playwrights were given staged readings and adjudicated at the Stocker Center, Studio Theatre.
The LCCC Playwriting Contest is part of GLT’s Surround series of free events presented across Northeast Ohio. Each participating playwright is a students in Dr. Daniel Cleary’s Playwriting for Stage and Screen course, and part of this year’s competition was that writers consider themes present in Shakespeare’s As You Like It as part of their writing process.
Tuesday night these ten-minute plays were read by student actors from Professor Dave Cotton’s acting for theater classes, and evaluated by Northeast Ohio playwrights Christine Howey, Margaret Lynch, Eric Schmiedl, Michael Oatman and GLT Educational Outreach Associate David Hansen.
First Place was awarded to The Cracks in Our Foundations by Krista Price, and Second Place to Spontaneous Tom by Emily Bittita and these two works will receive fully-staged, script-in-hand performances, performed by Great Lakes Theater actor-teachers and directed by David Hansen on Tuesday, April 29 at 7:30 PM at the Stocker Center, Studio Theatre. This performance is free and open to the public.
Third Place was awarded to Switch by Cameron Dobos. Special thanks to LCCC Director of Theater Jeremy K. Benjamin for his great work facilitating this exciting annual event!

So many exciting developments this year, tied to the 25th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, now playing at the Ohio Theatre. One very exciting event, as old as Great Lakes Theater’s (GLT) original adaptation itself, is The A Christmas Carol Writing Contest.
Twenty-five years ago, working closely with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), our education department developed a writing contest for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students across the district. Students are invited to write anything they like -- a story, a poem, a play, a song – inspired by themes present in Dickens’ classic work. Winners from each school are celebrated by their peers at special matinee performances exclusively for CMSD school kids.
Every year six grand prize winners are chosen who receive special recognition and additional gifts, like a plaque with their name on it and a fine, hardcover edition of A Christmas Carol. This year and for the first time, these grand prize winners were featured on WCPN’s award-winning arts and culture program The Sound of Applause, interviewed by host Dee Perry and their stories read on the air by members of GLT’s acting company including Laurie Birmingham, Laura Welsh Berg, Lynn Robert Berg, Aled Davies, Darryl Lewis and M.A. Taylor.
The result is a charming and enjoyable hour of stories and conversation. These grand prize winning students produced works which are funny, thoughtful, moving, and surprisingly wise.
The program will be rebroadcast on WCPN 90.3 FM on Friday, December 20 at 2 p.m., and on Tuesday, December 24 – Christmas Eve Day – at 2 p.m. You can also listen online, right now, by visiting The Sound of Applause event page for the broadcast.

As if their performances on stage didn't showcase their talent enough... The cast of Guys and Dolls put their own theatrical spin on Justin Timberlake's Suit and Tie in this awesome music video. (PS: They can still "...show you a few thangs..." at the Hanna Theatre. The show runs thru 6/30! Hint. Hint.)

Nearly 350 revelers attended our 2013 (speakeasy-themed) fundraising gala, "Guys and Dolls: Behind the Scenes," on Saturday, May 11 at our Scene and Prop Shop. Attendees sampled signature cocktails inspired by the era of bath tub gin, savored a "Rockin' (the Boat)" buffet dinner prepared by Marigold Catering, enjoyed live entertainment by Lounge Kitty (and her 6-piece band) and bid on silent and live auctions that featured one-of-a-kind experiences and weekend getaway packages. All proceeds benefited our mainstage and education programming which positively impacts over 100,000 adults and students annually. Thanks to all of our supporters for helping to make the evening such a successful and memorable one!
